In our new Dog Parkology limited podcast series, one of the great parks we discuss is the Hugh Rogers WAG park in Whitefish, Montana – not far from Glacier National Park.

The park is owned by the city, but the WAG name comes from the Whitefish Animal Group who helps manage the space. The namesake of the park is Dr. Hugh Rogers, who was a beloved local veterinarian.

The Whitefish Animal Group (WAG) team is comprised of a dozen dedicated volunteers that help keep things in order and make the park the best it can be. They aim to promote safe and responsible dog ownership.

Opened in 2009, Hugh Rogers Dog Park is five acres of beautiful nature and fantastic mountain views. There’s plenty of space for all dogs and humans to play off-leash.

USA Today previously named it one of the 10 Best Dog Parks in America.

The park features an agility course, pond and dog beach, accessible paved paths,
drinking water access for all, plenty of benches, a community pavilion, a dog wash station, and more.

Leslie Lowe of Beargrass Landscape Architecture, who worked on the design, told us on Dog Parkology:

“My whole idea with dog parks was let's create a dog park for dogs and people, not put up a fence and call it a dog park.

We love all the different options for activities in this gigantic park, where dogs have a lot of room to play while also having options for playing and exploration… I think when you do that with a park, then you have a lot less conflicts.”

By having this mix of options for play, all the while being surrounded by plenty of beautiful nature, it makes the Hugh Rogers WAG Park an enticing destination for all dogs and their humans to go to.

Many on Instagram and elsewhere online have also shared their wonderful experiences, speaking to their positive experiences of visiting Hugh Rogers – both from locals and those just passing by.
